Nature photography

My lifelong fascination with natural history has led not only to my professional career but also to a hobby of casual close-up photography, with a concentration on insects.  The exquisitely intricate adaptations displayed by diverse insect species highlight the challenge of understanding the genetic basis for animal morphology and behavior.

About these images

A sampling of my snapshots are displayed on this and the following pages.  Only a dozen or so of these photos were taken outside of southern Illinois; a majority were taken within the confines of the one-acre lot surrounding our home in Jackson County.

Luna moth at Little Grand Canyon

For still there are so many things
that I have never seen:
in every wood, in every spring
there is a different green.
